Prof. Wu Jianmin, executive vice chairman of the China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy, spoke about the current international situation at China Science and Humanities Forum at the UCAS Yanqihu campus on March 14. It was the 149th lecture of the forum.

The lecture, attended by over 500 students and faculty members, was hosted by Prof. Qin Dahe, vice chairman of China Association for Science and a CAS member.

Prof. Wu, a former diplomat, said that the entire world is now engaging in reflection. Problems have been unavoidable during the course of China’s development after the reform and opening-up period. The young especially need to reflect on those problems, he noted. By comparing the current situation with history, it's possible to develop a clearer understanding and analysis of the international situation.

He explained that the theme of the times had changed to peace and development noting that change is attributable to five factors: lessons from the two world wars, the deterrence of nuclear weapons, economic globalization, in-depth modification of the Western world, and the needs of global economic development.

The former diplomat also mentioned the situation in Hong Kong and Macau. He said that Deng Xiaoping realized the new situation of the world and proposed “one country, two systems”in order to create a win-win situation. China needs to follow the trend of the times along the road of peaceful development to fulfill its reform goals, Prof. Wu concluded.

In the Q&A session, Prof. Wu exchanged ideas with UCAS graduate students concerning the Russian war, local war, and the responsibilities of large nations. His frank and detailed answers were applauded by the audience.
