Professor Wu Xinhua gave a lecture on June 11 about 3D printing and the challenges of commercial application.

3D printing is a manufacturing process wherein components are made into desired shapes in one step from computer design without using moulds or machining. Professor Wu Xinhua is a leading researcher about light-metal research and additive manufacturing and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

As Director of the Australian Research Council's Centre for Excellence for Design in Light Metals and Monash University's Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM), Professor Wu leads a team of more than 100 researchers focusing on the use of advanced light metal alloys. Their team completed two 3D printed aircraft jet engines in February, 2015.

Prof. Wu’s lecture introduced the forefront of research in the 3D printing of metals, the uniqueness of the 3D printed full-size jet engine made by MCAM, and the challenges for 3D printed metallic parts to meet aerospace and biomedical requirements and achieve quality certification for their commercial applications.
