The UCAS opening ceremony for the new academic year at its Yanqihu campus on Sept. 3 marks that the Yanqihu campus, which had been built for 10 years, has been put into use.

Zhao Lin, a new Chinese student, major in computational mathematics, said smiling, “I’m very glad to study here. The Yanqihu campus is very beautiful and quiet, which is very suitable for doing research.”

“I just arrived here, my Chinese is poor, but I love this place and the people. I am also excited today,” said a Danish student at the opening ceremony.

The campus, about 70 kilometers from the downtown, covers an area of over 713,000 square meters and a floor space of more than 360,000 square meters. It is expected to accommodate over 10,000 graduate students and over 2,000 teachers as the main campus of UCAS.

UCAS is a higher education institution, focusing on graduate education. There are 41, 200 graduate students studying at UCAS, with 49 percent of doctoral students. The predecessor of UCAS was the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS). In 2012, it was renamed the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS).
