25 PhD Students Receive the 2011 GUCAS-BHPB Scholarship

The 2011 CAS – BHPB Workshop was held in Beijing on 17 October, 2011. Over 40 participants, including the leadership of CAS and GUCAS, BHP Billiton (BHPB) representatives, and scholarship recipients, attended the workshop, which was hosted by Dr. Lu Jianzhong from BHPB Corporate Affairs, China.

The workshop featured a productive discussion and reports. Prof. Zhu Xiangbin, Assistant President of GUCAS, gave a speech concerning the introduction of the GUCAS-BHPB cooperation program. Later, Prof. Shi Yong, Director of the CAS Research Center for Fictitious Economy and Data Science, Prof. Luo Xiaorong from the CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics and Prof. Ge Wei from the CAS Institute of Process Engineering each spoke concerning cooperative projects between CAS and BHPB.

At the subsequent 2011 GUCAS-BHPB Scholarship Awards Ceremony, 25 PhD students from Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics were formally presented with the 2011 GUCAS-BHPB Scholarship. Prof. Cao Jinghua, Deputy Director General of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS and Dr. Brian Smith, Senior Manager R&D, BHPB, congratulated the scholarship recipients. Prof. Zhu Xiangbin and Dr. Brian Smith presented an award to each of the scholarship recipients. In addition, Ms. Song Chunxia, from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS, representing all recipients, described her current study.

The GUCAS-BHPB Scholarship was established after an agreement was signed between GUCAS and BHPB in 2004. The GUCAS-BHPB Scholarship is divided into two parts: a 12,000 RMB Student Scholarship and a 4,000 RMB Supervisor’s Award for Research. Granting scholarships to 174 students from 56 CAS Institutes from 2005 to 2011, the Workshop has been held for 7 years, thanks to the generous sponsorship of BHPB. Students receiving the scholarship have demonstrated leadership and creativity in their respective research areas with direct benefits to society.
