“Science and Architecture”, a series of lectures by famous contemporary Chinese architects, were launched on June 17 at the Zhongguancun campus.

The lectures are organized by the Architecture Research & Design Center of the University of UCAS as optional courses in the summer semester and are presided by Director of the Center Cui Tong. Seven prestigious Chinese architects were invited.

The first lecture of the series was given by Zhu Xiaodi, President and Chief Architect of the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design.

Starting his lecture with Chinese calligraphy, Zhu showed a piece of his work “Nan De Hu Tu”, which means “where ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise.” From the angles of calligraphy, which is closely linked with the Chinese culture, and its collection and exhibition, he presented his ideas on architecture and explained his “confusion and un-confusion” when thinking about Chinese architecture.

Zhu shared with the audience some of his architecture works and vividly introduced his experiences in the designing processes. The lecture earned applauses from hundreds of students.

Before the lecture ended, there was a Q&A session, where Zhu answered the students’ questions on “Chinese architecture’s expression of Chinese characteristics”, “city and architecture” and “ideal and reality”.
