UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Visits UCAS

Prof. George Blumenthal, Chancellor of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) visited the UCAS Yuquanlu campus on 21 October, meeting with Prof. Ding Zhongli, President of UCAS and Vice-President of CAS.

UCAS Vice-President Prof. Wu Yueliang gave a brief introduction of UCAS, covering UCAS history, advantages from being supported by CAS, unique student education mode as well as international exchanges and cooperation.

Prof. Blumenthal expressed his appreciation for the UCAS reception. He described UCSC, including its student training mode, strong fields, the location of its campuses and UCSC’s partnership with Chinese universities. He hoped UCSC might have more UCAS students and faculty members.

There was a discussion of the UCAS undergraduate overseas exchange program, the joint PhD program and scientific research cooperation. Prof. Blumenthal said UCAS is welcome to choose an appropriate cooperative mode with UCSC according to UCAS unique situation.

Prof. Xue Suijian, Associate Director General of the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, and Prof. Hu Zhongbo, Vice-Dean of the UCAS College of Materials Sciences and Opto-Electronic Technology, also attended the meeting.

Founded in 1965, UCSC has earned international distinction as a university with high-impact research and an uncommon commitment to teaching and public service. UC Santa Cruz was tied for 82nd in the list of Best National Universities in the United States in U.S. News & World Report‍ '​s 2016 rankings. It’s strong in such fields as biology, astronomy and space science, ecology and the arts. There are about 10,000 students studying at UCSC, among which international students account for 16%.
