On April 14th, 2018. Prof. Rudolf Podgornik, School of Physical Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), participated in the 16th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP) in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. He was awarded the status of State Specially Recruited Experts from Mr. Wang Zhigang, Minister of Science and Technology of China on the conferring ceremony.
After the ceremony, the Symposium of the Recruitment Program for Foreign Experts was held during the afternoon at the Wuzhou Hotel. Mr. Wang Zhigang, Minister of Science and Technology of China, and Mr. Zhang Jianguo, Vice-Minister of Science and Technology of China, who is also the Director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, jointly participated in the symposium and listened to the working progress and achievement from foreign experts in China and their suggestions on China’s development.
Prof. Rudolf Podgornik was selected as a Foreign Expert for the Thousand Talent Plan Program in 2017. His initial contribution to the physics of macromolecular interactions includes his reformulation of the widely used Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory of electrostatic interactions in field-theoretic form in 1988. This reformulation has become the standard for the modern theory of Coulomb fluids and electrostatic interactions ever since. From 2005 to 2011, Prof. Podgornik developed these ideas further to include the structure of counterions, dielectric discontinuities, the boundary surface structuring and solvent coupling effects. His work in this domain represents the state of the art regarding the weak and strong coupling approaches to Coulomb fluids.
