On April 10th, a delegation of 6 undergraduate students from St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, visited the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). UCAS Undergraduate Department hosted the visit. UCAS undergraduate volunteers, Jiang Xi, Lin Zhaoqing and Zhou Shaodong, participated in the activities.

At 9 o’clock in the morning, the delegation arrived at the Institute of Biophysics (IBP), CAS. Ph.D Zhang Lei from IBP extended a warm welcome to the delegation and gave a presentation about the history of IBP. After the short meeting, the delegation was led to several sites including CAS Protein Science Core Facility Center, State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Science, and Biological Imaging Center. During the visit, Cambridge students showed their interest in the mechanism of scientific equipment, and posed questions from time to time.

In the afternoon, the delegation came to the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS), CAS. First, they paid a visit to the exhibition hall, where the delegation learnt the history and achievements of some famous Chinese mathematicians by Dr. Zhao Tianle’s explanation. Then, the delegation went on a guided tour around AMSS, visiting the library, document showroom, and the State Key Laboratory of Scientific and Engineering Computing.

Then the delegation moved to the Institute of Automation, CAS (CASIA). At the Brain-inspired Intelligence Technology Centre, Dr. Zhang Qian delivered a lecture entitled “Research Progress in Brain-inspired Intelligence”. Next, the delegation went to the State Key Laboratory for Management and Control of Complex Systems, where the postgraduate students from CASIA demonstrated the biomimetic robot fish. Following was a brief introduction of molecular imaging system and its application in tumor treatment at the Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, CAS. Finally, the delegation came to the Center for Research on Intelligent Perception and Computing. They were impressed by the demonstration of heart rate detection based on face video image, and experienced it one by one.

Throughout the day, the Cambridge students and UCAS students kept interacting, discussing the scientific topics as well as sharing the college life with each other. At the end of the visit, Cambridge students expressed their gratitude to the students and teachers from UCAS and three institutes. They looked forward to the opportunity to visit and study at UCAS in the future.

As this is the second time that Cambridge selected students to visit UCAS, this visiting program not only strengthened the friendship between students of Cambridge and UCAS, but also laid a foundation for potential cooperation between two universities.
