President of European Research Council Lectures at CAS

Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, President of European Research Council (ERC) delivered a speech at CAS on June 23. The speech was organized by UCAS. Faculty members and students from UCAS and the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences of CAS (AMSS) were in attendance.

In his keynote speech "ERC and China: Achievements and Perspectives", Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon talked about his role as ERC president, ERC’s vision and its mission as a unique funding organization.  He also discussed the ERC success story as well as the characteristics of ERC funding . Bourguignon outlined funding opportunities for frontier research, making special mention of the participation of Chinese researchers in ERC projects, current options for China-based researchers to apply for ERC funding or participate in ERC teams.

A young scholar from Renmin University was invited to share his experience applying for the ERC project.

At the Q & A session, Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon answered many questions, including how long a scholar is required to stay in Europe when doing the ERC project, what restrictions there are on collaborators for an ERC project, whether workshops are funded by ERC, and more.

ERC  is a public body for funding of scientific and technological research conducted within the European Union.The main goal of the European Research Council is to encourage high quality research in Europe through competitive funding.
