Su Gang Meets with Associate Vice-President of the University of Waterloo

Dr. Ian Rowlands, the Associate Vice President of the University of Waterloo (UW), visited UCAS on the morning of October 18. Prof. Su Gang, Vice President of UCAS, met with the Rowlands and the Canadian delegation at the Yuquanlu campus.

Su welcomed and briefed the Canadian visitors on the university - institute’s fusion of leadership, faculty, and management, as well as UCAS's “two-phase” mode of cultivation. He also overviewed scholarship programs for International students and various collaborative international programs at UCAS, emphasizing the China - Canada collaborative programs and the Sino – Danish Center program.

Dr. Rowlands introduced the four characteristics of UW: experiential education, entrepreneurship, the transformation of R&D achievements and educational internationalization. He said UW is willing to cooperate closely with UCAS in both scientific research and education.

Both sides held preliminary discussions to promote cooperation in Quantum Information Science.

Also in attendance were Ms. Zhao Suping, International Relations Manager and Special Advisor of UW, and Ms. Tong Ting, Program Coordinator of the Division of American and Oceanian Affairs of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS.

Founded in 1957, the University of Waterloo is a public research university with a main campus in Waterloo, Ontario. Waterloo's engineering program has consistently been ranked amongst the best in the world. In the 2017 QS university rankings for the field of engineering and technology, Waterloo was ranked 60th in the world, and third in Canada. The university has also gained notability in the field of computer science. In the U.S. News and World Report 2017 rankings for computer science, the university was ranked 18th in the world and first in Canada. UCAS signed an agreement on the Joint PhD program with UW on November 14, 2016.
