Undergraduate freshmen of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) received a special gift together withadmission notices– a Loongson-3.
Loongson-3 is a general-purpose MIPS64 processor designed by Loongson Technology, which is a partnership between Beijing-based chip designer BLX IC Design Corp. and the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).As China’s homemade microchip, Loongson-3is expected to help China improve technical self-sufficiency.
The chip is attached to a letter from UCAS president Prof. Li Shushen to all freshmen of 2019. “Small as this chip is, it drives an enormous world. Simple and unadorned, it represents the rising independent R&D capacity of the CAS. “ Li wrote in the letter, “from this chip, I hope you can learn more and see farther!”
Being the largest graduate educational institution, the main task of UCAS has long been graduate education. In 2014, UCAS began to recruit undergraduates. This year, a total of 392 undergraduate freshmen are enrolled by the university.
