The CAS-ANU Research Cooperation Symposium was held at the UCAS Zhongguancun campus in the afternoon of April 13. The seminar topics covered material science and nano-science, astronomy and astrophysics, life sciences, mathematics, earth and environmental science and medical research. 60 scholars from several CAS institutes, and UCAS participated in the symposium with 30 scholars from the Australian National University (ANU). The symposium was hosted by UCAS Vice-President Su Gang. Vice-Director of the CAS Bureau of International Co-operation Dr. Cao Jinghua also attended the symposium.
Prof. Su thanked all of the scholars present who have been involved in scientific research and educational communication between Australia and China. He briefly introduced the UCAS innovative mode of operation-integration of education and research as well as integration of university and institutes. Prof. Su expressed his hope that UCAS and ANU would continue to deepen exchange and cooperation with each other.
ANU President Professor Ian Young and ANU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Harding introduced the general situation and distinctive courses of ANU. Professor Young said that he never imagined there would be so many Australia scholars who would visit CAS with him as it was the largest ever ANU delegation to visit China.
In addition to the three subject-themed sessions, the symposium discussed several issues and reached initial consensus on an undergraduate exchange program and construction of a CAS-ANU scientific education center.
