Major General Luo Yuan, a renowned international strategist with the PLA and a national security expert, spoke about security conditions in neighboring regions and soft power enhancement at the Yuquanlu campus on June 1. The three-hour lecture was chaired by Prof. Fang Xin.
Gen. Luo, also Executive Deputy Head and Secretary-general of the China Strategic Culture Promotion Association, discussed such issues as the South China Sea and China-Japan relations. He offered insights about China’s national defense policy characterized by a proactive defense.
Using Huangyan Island and Ren’ai Reef as an example, Gen. Luo said that although peaceful consultation remains the major tool in solving disputes surrounding the South China Sea and Diaoyu Island, a strong national defense serves as the fundamental backup.
In addition to the “hard power” of China’s national defense, Gen. Luo called for the strengthening of the country’s national defense “soft power” building, which is, the promotion of the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice through disseminating stories about national heroes.
In the Q&A session, Gen. Luo urged the students to cultivate confidence, inspiration and lofty aims, to work hard until their goals are reached, and never give up until the job is done.
