It has been 40 years since the introduction of China’s reform and opening-up policy. On 14th, October, it marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of UCAS (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences). A series of celebrations were held in one of its campuses near the Yan Qi lake.
In this golden month, Beijing enjoys a cool weather with blue skies. Situated at the root of the Great Wall and the lakeside, the campus was auspicious with alumni and foreign guests and friends from afar. Red carpets and flags added to such jubilance.
Around 15 PM, the forum opened at the lecture hall of China-Denmark building. Focusing on the theme--Fusion of Research and Education&Innovation in Fostering Great Minds, this forum gathered more than 30 leaders from over 20 universities and institutes both at home and abroad, including Peking University, Fudan University and University of Science and Technology of China. Bai Chunli, the president of CAS, and Li Shusen, the president of UCAS both participated in the event.
Wang Yanfen, the vice president of UCAS presided this forum and she invited Mr. Bai to make a keynote speech after a brief introduction of all guests and friends present. Mr. Bai expressed his warm welcome to all people. Standing at a new starting point, Mr. Bai, in his statement reviewing the great achievements UCAS has made over the past 40 years, envisioned the promising practice of integrating research with education and cultivating high-quality talents with abilities to make scientific innovations. He introduced the three-sphere integrated plan which involves scientific research, formation of faculty members and units for education.
Then President Li Shusen described UCAS’s practices and efforts in this respect. He said that UCAS has all along strived to pioneer the development of China’s postgraduate education and has steadily promoted undergraduate education through innovative philosophies and practical endeavors. Since 2014, great process has been made in UCAS’s faculty members engaged in the fusion of research and education project. President Li expressed his readiness to usher in a brighter prospect to strengthen cooperation on education with all parties.
During the forum, all presidents and directors commended the fruitful results UCAS has made and supported those plans. They also introduced the development history, training plans and current achievements of their universities and institutes as well as expressed their wishes to intensify partnership in this regard. When the forum was about to concluding, Mr. Morten Laugesen, Danish director of China-Denmark cooperation project, applauded the choosing of this hall to host this event for the vision behind its open-style design means openness and interaction.
Against the backdrop of globalization, since the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with Comrade Xi jinping at its core, has put forward the Belt and Road Initiative, it is more imperative that UCAS echoes the call at this critical stage. At the 40th anniversary, we are sure that this forum will help realize the goal of building UCAS into a top world-class university and form a real international platform for further cooperation with high-level universities and institutes, therefore, to deliver to countries along the routes and even the world high-quality scientific intellects with innovative thoughts in key areas.
