Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney Visits GUCAS

A delegation led by Dr. Michael Spence, Vice-chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney (USYD) visited GUCAS on 19 October, 2011. Prof. Deng Yong, Chairman of the University Council, GUCAS, met with them.

Prof. Deng expressed his welcome for the visit of Dr. Spence and his respect for the outstanding achievements of USYD both in education and research. He told the guests about the distinctive characteristics of GUCAS.

Dr. Spence thanked Prof. Deng for his time and spoke of his desire to ensure cooperation between USYD and GUCAS, which was gladly received by Prof. Deng. They both hope to meet in Sydney in the future.

The USYD delegation included Dr. Michael Spence, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of USYD and Professor Robert Tierney, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work of USYD. Prof. Wang Yanfen, Vice President of GUCAS, attended the meeting.

Dr. Spence was invited to give a lecture entitled “What’s the Point of Universities” to the China Sciences and Humanities Forum after the meeting.

Dr. Spence is an internationally recognized leader in the field of intellectual property theory. He graduated from the University of Sydney with first class Honours in English, Italian and Law (BA (Hons) in 1985 and Law, LLB (Hons), in 1987. He began to develop his career at Oxford over the next 20 years after earning a DPhil there. He was appointed as head of the Law faculty and head of the Social Sciences Division at Oxford. He took up the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney in July, 2008.
