Introduction

Research Training Groups (RTGs), funded by Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) since 1990, are thematically focused and offer a specially designed study program accompanying the research program.
UCAS joined the program in Nov. 2002. RTGs related to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are subject to a competitive peer review process directed by UCAS and DFG.
It is expected that the number of PhD scholarship swill be mirrored by the participation of otherwise financed PhD candidates. The students’ theses are thus integrated into a research programme (often interdisciplinary) which is a main focus of the peer-review exercise. This gives the students the opportunity and incentive to interact and cooperate, enhancing their theses as well as their transferable skills.

Up till now, about German20 students under this program have visited CAS institutes in Beijing and Shanghai and 25 UCAS students have visited corresponding German institutions.
