On April 10, Prof. Fernando Quevedo, Director of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) visited UCAS. Prof. Wu Yueliang, Vice President of UCAS met with Prof. Quevedo.

Prof. Wu and Prof. Quevedo discussed the construction and development of the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, as well as the related research cooperation and joint training, with positive results.

Following their talk, Prof. Quevedo delivered an academic speech titled "Cosmic plus, the Higgs Boson and the Future of Fundamental Physics" to more than 60 graduate students and professors, explaining the Cosmic Inflation theory, the Higgs mechanism, the Higgs Boson and predicting possible future directions for fundamental physics.

ICTP, founded in 1964, provides researchers from developing countries with the continuing education and skills that they need to enjoy long and productive careers. ICTP has been a major force in stemming the scientific brain drain from the developing world. For more than 45 years, ICTP has been a driving force behind global efforts to advance scientific expertise in the developing world.

Prof. Fernando Quevedo, from Cambridge University, was born in Guatemala. He was appointed the director of ICTP in October, 2009. Prof. Quevedo is a well-known theoretical particle physicist with wide-ranging research interests in string theory, phenomenology and cosmology. He was awarded the 1998 ICTP Prize in recognition of his important contributions to superstring theory.
