UCAS President Meets with Japanese Science and Technology Delegation

A delegation, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), as well as presidents of Japanese Universities and academics, visited the UCAS Yuquanlu Campus on 23 March, 2015. UCAS President Prof. Ding Zhongli, accompanied by Vice-President Prof. Wu Yueliang, met with the delegation.

Welcoming the guests, Prof. Wu introduced the functions of CAS in research and education and the university-institute’s fusion of leadership, faculty, and management, as well as UCAS's “two-phase” cultivation mode. He also described the historical development, and present status of undergraduate recruitment and education. He noted that China and Japan are close neighbors, with CAS developing close cooperation with Japanese research institutes and universities. “In this regard, we are very pleased to work together with Japanese top universities to develop a strategic partnership and all-around cooperation”, he said.

Prof. Wu reviewed how the scientific and educational cooperation between China and Japan facilitated the development of particle physics in China in the 1960s. He also introduced the various international cooperation programs of UCAS, emphasizing the Sino-Danish Center.

The Japanese guests expressed their appreciation for the hospitality shown by UCAS, and said that Japanese universities were willing to cooperate with such prestigious, highly selective, research-oriented universities as UCAS. Mr. Sotaro Ito, Senior Deputy Director-General of the Science and Technology Policy Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Senior Director of JST, recommended the "Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science” (SAKURA Exchange Program in Science). This program offers student exchanges between Asia and Japan and is financially sponsored by JST. In 2014, more than 1,300 Chinese students were sponsored for short-term visits to Japanese universities, research institutions and private companies. He hoped to receive applications from UCAS students this year.

Members of the Japanese science and technology delegation included Prof. Kiyofumi Kawaguchi, Former President of Ritsumeikan University, Prof. Akira Fujishima, President of Tokyo University of Science, Prof. Etsuko Katsu, Vice President of Meiji University, Prof. Toshiya Ueki, Executive Vice President of Tohoku University, and Mr. Kawamata Kazuho, Director of the JST Beijing office. The attendees from the UCAS side included Prof. Sun Wenke, Deputy Dean of the College of Earth Sciences and Prof. Shi Minjun, Deputy Director of the Research Center on Fictitious Economy and Data Science (FEDS), CAS.

Background

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), is one of the ministries of the Japanese government. MEXT is responsible for determining the policies and direction of the educational system in Japan.

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) is one of the core institutions responsible for the implementation of science and technology policy in Japan, including the government’s Science and Technology Basic Plan.

Ritsumeikan University is a private university in Kyoto, Japan, tracing its roots to 1869. Today, the university is known as one of the four leading private universities in western Japan. It was ranked 83 by QS Asian University Rankings in 2014/15.

Tokyo University of Science, formerly "Science University of Tokyo", is a Japanese private university in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in 1881 as The Tokyo Academy of Physics by 21 graduates of the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo (then the Imperial University). It was ranked 103 by QS Asian University Rankings in 2014/15.
Meiji University is a private university in Tokyo and Kawasaki, founded in 1881 by three lawyers of the Meiji era. It is one of the largest and most prestigious Japanese universities in Tokyo, Japan. Former Premier Zhou Enlai studied in the department of government of Meiji University.

Tohoku University, located in Sendai, Miyagi in the Tohoku Region, Japan, is a Japanese national university. Founded in 1907, it is the third oldest Imperial University in Japan and among the National Seven Universities. It is considered as one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, and one of the top fifty universities in the world. It was ranked 71 by QS World University Rankings and 13 by QS Asian University Rankings in 2014/15. The literary giant Lu Xun and mathematician Su Buqing studied there.
