The 2015 NCNST International Summer Camp, was held from September 3 to 8 at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST). It was the first summer camp jointly held by UCAS and NCNST. More than 50 students from over 15 countries participated in the camp including graduate students from France, India, Iran, Norway, Pakistan, Thailand and the United States.
During the welcome party on September 2, the students received a warm welcome from NCNST faculty and students, who performed traditional Chinese dances. Mr. Huang Dingcheng, Director of the UCAS International Student Office gave a welcome speech.
During the summer camp opening ceremony, the students filled a peace tree with their signatures and fingerprints, expressing their best wishes for the future development of nanoscience and technology. After a brief introduction of UCAS made by Dr. Xie Yong, Director of the UCAS International Affairs Office, the students had an active academic discussion with Prof. Hüsnü Aslan from Aarhus University and Dr. He Sha from the University of California at San Diego. In the afternoon, the students learned about Chinese culture through maps, pictures and games. Then the students made dumplings together for the rest of the day.
On September 4 and 5, the students attended the 2015 China Nano, a global conference for nanoscience and technology. During the conference, researchers and experts in nano fields from all over the world discussed developments of nanoscience and technology. More than 100 academic lectures, involving nano materials, nanobiology, energy and other nano related areas were presented. The students also took photographs with Prof. Bai Chunli, President of CAS.
On September 6, Prof. Wang Chen from NCNST discussed the opportunities and challenges of nanoscience and technology with students. He summarized recent developments in nanomaterials, nanobiology and energy related areas. He called on the students to find environmentally friendly solutions to apply nanotechnology for daily life. Prof. Hossein Ganjidoust from Iran highly praised Prof. Wang’s efforts in Sino-Iran cooperation of science and education. After that, the international students took turns to introduce their studies and the culture of their own countries. During the summer camp, the students developed a deeper understanding of China. They not only learned Chinese culture, but also experienced friendship from all over the world.
Prof. Liu Minghua, Director of NCNST, congratulated the students on their performance during the summer camp. In his concluding speech, he encouraged cooperation and friendship beyond nations and cultural differences. He then awarded the excellent international students with certificates from UCAS and NCNST.
The 2015 International Summer Camp, sponsored by the UCAS Education Foundation, is a significant step by UCAS and NCNST, who are building an International platform for excellent researchers and graduate students.
