UNESCO Assistant Director-General Visits UCAS

Flavia Schlegel, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences visited UCAS on the morning of May 9. Vice-President Prof. Wu Yueliang met with her at Zhongguancun campus. The two sides discussed preparations regarding UNESCO category 2 institution “International Centre for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific (ICTP-AP)”. Both parties agreed to explore opportunities for programs and activities related to fundamental research on theoretical physics and relevant interdisciplinary research through a cooperative relationship. The International Conference on Frontiers of Science“Quantum Cosmophysics” held in Beijing from July 29-31 will be the first joint venture between the two institutions.

Flavia Schlegel expressed keen interest in the development of UCAS and spoke highly of the preparations for ICTP-AP. She also expressed the hope that the two sides would continue to work together to push forward the ICTP-AP so that it could become an important institution of UNESCO and promote the education and development of fundamental research.

After the meeting, the delegation visited the Zhongguancun campus.

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific (ICTP-AP), which is under construction, is a new regional center for theoretical physics and interdisciplinary research areas created in collaboration with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), CAS and the National Natural Science Foundation China (NSFC). The establishment of ICTP-AP was approved by the 38th General Conference of UNESCO in 2015, as recommended by the Executive Board at its 197th session (197 EX/Decision 16 Part XVI), and the new centre will be located in Beijing, on a UCAS campus.
