UCAS Vice-President Wu Yueliang met with Christopher Tremewan, General Secretary of Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), on the morning of Sep. 29. Tremewan announced that UCAS joined APRU with the approval of the APRU Steering Committee.
Wu welcomed Tremewan’s visit. He said UCAS was honored to join the APRU family. UCAS will actively participate in various APRU activities and promote the development of science and education in the Asia-Pacific region in accord with the APRU by taking advantage of its unique strengths in science and education.
Tremewan gave a brief introduction to APRU. He said the APRU is becoming increasingly influential and is attracting attention from many governments. As a leader in both science and education, UCAS has long been considered highly qualified to join the APRU. Tremewan stated that he believes the addition of UCAS to the APRU will help strengthen and develop the organization.
In addition, both sides discussed possible activities UCAS may participate in and areas in which APRU members and UCAS may cooperate.
APRU was founded in 1997 by the presidents of Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC as a network of the presidents of the leading universities of the Pacific Rim. Over the last two decades it has enabled greater collaboration between members over a wide range of activities in education, research and in service to society. APRU members include over 40 well-known universities such as Stanford University, Caltech, UC Berkeley, and Tokyo University. Seven universities from mainland China have joined APRU, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan Universiy, Nanjing University, University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University and UCAS. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong University and Taiwan University are the three APRU members in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In December 16, 2014, UCAS President Ding Zhongli expressed his wish that UCAS would like to join APRU when he met with Henry T. Yang, Chancellor of the University of California, Santa Barbara. In March 3, 2017, Zhang Yaping, Vice-President of CAS, met with the APRU delegation at CAS, together with Wu Yueliang.
