On June 21, 2018, Prof. Su Gang, Vice President, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), met with Dr. Carlos Saavedra, President of Universidad de Concepción, at the Yuquanlu campus. Calors Parra, Minister-counsellor (Agricultural affairs), Embassy of Chile, Prof. Huang Jiasheng, Chief Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences South America Center for Astronomy, Dr. Wang Wei, Deputy Director of Chinese Academy of Sciences South America Center for Astronomy were present.
Prof. Su welcomed the senior delegation from Universidad de Concepción and briefed the guests on the history of higher education at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the university - institute’s fusion of leadership, faculty, and management, as well as UCAS's “two-phase” mode of education and the strategic development opportunity of UCAS for the Huairou Science City in the future. Prof. Su also introduced the supporting role of UCAS and CAS institutions for campus construction in many cities in China.
Dr. Carlos Saavedra expressed his appreciation to Su Gang for the hospitality for his visit. He hoped that Universidad de Concepción and UCAS will establish an international partnership with the opportunity of signing the collaboration agreement.
After the meeting, Prof. Su Gang and Dr. Carlos Saavedra signed the Memorandum of Understanding on student exchange and Academic Exchange Agreement on behave of the universities respectively. Both sides planned to firstly start collaborations on Oceanology, Geography, Deep-sea exploration and study in Antarctic. During the meeting, Prof. Zhao Gongbo, Researcher of National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) & Dean of Department of Astronomy, School of Astronomy and Space Science, UCAS gave a brief introduction of School of Astronomy and Space Science to the delegation from Universidad de Concepción.
Introduction of the Chinese Academy of Science South America Center for Astronomy (CASSACA)
The Chinese Academy of Science South America Center for Astronomy (CASSACA), also known as China-Chile Joint Center for Astronomy (CCJCA) is a newly founded institute in 2013 concentrating on developing astronomy research collaborations between China and Chile, which also serves as a collaboration center for astronomy between China and other South America countries. The center is constructed in the mutual interests of CAS and CONICYT.

Introduction of Universidad de Concepción
Universidad de Concepción is a traditional Chilean private university, the work of the Penquista community, one of the most traditional and prestigious in its country, considered complex due to its extensive research in the various areas of knowledge. Founded on May 14, 1919, it is the 3rd oldest university in Chile. It was the 1st University created in the center-south zone of the country, besides being the 1st to be constituted as a private law corporation and belong to the Cruz del Sur University Network; it also belongs to the G9 University Network. The University of Concepción also had a pioneering role in the reform movement of Chilean universities that took place at the end of the 60's of the 20th century. It was the 1st Chilean university that approved the University Reform in that period (1968), giving greater participation to students in university management.
It is currently accredited by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA-Chile) for the maximum period of 7 years (of a maximum of 7), from November 2016 to November 2023. Figure in the 3rd position within the Chilean universities according to the webometric classification of the CSIC (July 2017) and in the 3rd position according to the América Economía 2017 ranking as well as national and international rankings. Within the Chilean universities, it is also among the 11 that figure in the QS 2017 world university ranking, among the 10 that appear in the Times Higher Education 2017 ranking, and among the 25 that appear in the ranking of Scimago Institution Rankings (SIR) 2017, with the 3rd position nationally and 572th worldwide.
Its Concepción campus was declared a National Heritage in 2016 by the Council of National Monuments of Chile; what makes it the 1st and only University in Chile to have this recognition due to the design and architectural style of its environment that has been implemented in its buildings and campus-level environment since its foundation.
