On the morning of September 8, 2018, the opening ceremony of UCAS was held at the Yanqihu Campus, over 9000 UCAS freshmen attended the ceremony.
BAI Chunli, PresidentofChinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Party Secretary and the Honorary President of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), attended the ceremony and gave a speech. BAI hoped that when studying or doing research, UCAS students can not only carry it out to its breadth and greatness, but also raise it to its greatest height and brilliancy; he also hoped that every student can keep society and the country in mind. The two points BAI covered in his speech was printed and hanged on the library, which are also the themes of the 40th anniversary of UCAS.
UCAS is an innovative university which adopts the philosophy called “a fusion of scientific research and teaching”. At present, based on the high-level professors and scientific research resources of the research institutes of CAS, UCAS has established 38 science and education integration schools and colleges and a high-level faculty system composed of more than 3,000 full-time professors and teachers and more than 10,000 graduate supervisors. Academician LI Yongfang, a doctoral supervisor at UCAS and the representative of UCAS professors and teachers, said that the university is the golden period with the highest learning efficiency and the greatest gain in life. He hoped that the students will love what they learn, and be always earnest, hard working, and diligent.
YUN Yang, a 2018 undergraduate student, chose UCAS because of his enthusiasm for science and the willing to serve country with scientific knowledge. He said, "Now I find myself really close to my dream: I can use the most advanced experimental equipment, learn the most advanced scientific theories, and talk to top scientists. I believe that I can pick the fruits of truth by myself in the future."
WANG Boyi, the representative of new graduate students, spoke at the opening ceremony. It is her second time to spoke as a freshmen representative in UCAS. In 2014, WANG entered the school as an undergraduate, and now in 2018, she is here for her doctor degree. She said,“After four years’basic training, we are about to start our research life in a certain field. And now, here are some questions we have to ask ourselves: what do I really want to study? What do I want to solve? What kind of life do I really want?” She hopes that every student can reevaluate themselves, which helps them to explore the truths of the world.
In 2018,480 international students from 57 countries are accepted by UCAS, including 249 doctoral students, 218 master students, and 13 advanced students. At the opening ceremony, BAI mentioned that the number of PhD students in UCAS is higher than any other college or university in China. He hope that international students and Chinese students can learn from each other and help each other, strengthen mutual understanding of civilization, and create the scientific and technological achievements shared by mankind together. Nicola di Trani, the representative of the international students, said on the ceremony,“China is now the world’s number one producer of undergraduates with science and engineering degrees.And here I am, eager to start this semester with all of you guys, and learn as much as possible about the research here, but most of all the Chinese language and culture. I really hope to spend a wonderful semester at UCAS with all of you guys!"
YUHaoyang, the representative for senior students, said: "UCAS has provided us with great faculty and environment for learning. I still remember the feeling of receiving the respondingfrom Pro. XIAO from School of Mathematical Scienceswhen I asked for his advice when I met math problems.Their words and deeds are like bright lights that illuminating the scientific research path of every student."
LI Shushen, President of UCAS and Party Secretary, hosted the opening ceremony. LI hopes that all UCAS students strive to acquire knowledge and to improve their comprehensive quality here, in order to contribute to technological innovation and to realize their own scientific dreams as soon as possible.
