300 postgraduates of college of life sciences took part in the World Life Science Conference

On the 27th of October, the 2018 World Life Science Conference (WLSC) was opened in ChinaNational Convention Center. The theme of the conference is “Science, for Better Life”. WLSC was organized by China Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The China Union of Life Science Societies (CULSS) and the China National Center for Biotechnology Development are the undertaking units. Over 400 domestic and overseas top scientists in the area of life sciences including several Nobel Laureates made high level academic exchanges and showed the latest scientific results which were focused on many themes, such as medicine and health, agriculture and food safety, environmental science, biotechnology and economy and health policy.

On the early morning of 27th of October, 300 postgraduates of college of life sciences of Yanqihu campus took the buses to join the opening ceremony of the conference and listen to the thematic academic report.

Chen Zhu, vice chairman of the NPC standing committee and the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor David Baltimore, Noble laureate in Physiology or Medicine delivered speeches. Song Jun, the party member and the secretary of the secretariat of CAST read out the important instructions made by Li Keqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and premier of the State Council. Li Jinghai, the director of the council of the national natural science foundation of China, vice president of CAST and academician of CAS attended the opening ceremony of the conference. CULSS is the rotating chairman of the conference. Cao Xuetao, president of Nankai University and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering hosted the opening ceremony of the conference.

After the opening ceremony of the conference, David Baltimore, the 1975 Noble laureate in Physiology or Medicine and the professor of California Institute of Technology, Jules Hoffmann, the 2011 Noble laureate in Physiology or Medicineand Victor J.Dzau, the president of the Institute of Medicine and the professor of Duke University delivered wonderful and memorable presentations. David Baltimore, who is at the age of eighty, stood almost 1 hour to give his fruitful speech, which moved the postgraduates. During the conference, students were all concentrated on the speeches.

The conference was a hit with students and they are moved by academic researches and scientific spirits of Noble laureates and top scientists. Students said they should make more efforts to learn academic thoughts and researches in the area of life sciences. Wen Jing, a student of Class 513,said that she felt lucky to take part in the conference and she would work hard to make her own contributions to the development of life sciences. Yu Tengwei, a student of Class 505, said that he will take this opportunity to deeply understand his profession and make his own contributions.

The conference, with several parallel sessions, lasted for three days. Academic reports were made focused on 60 themes, and students could study at different sessions in terms of their interests. The conference was a great event of world life sciences and life sciences circle of China and it was the highest level conference with the widest range of influence China has hosted in this area. Students of college of life sciences of UCAS were honored to take part in the conference and were inspired by those excellent scientists and the wonderful achievements. They will make more efforts to study and research to make their own contributions to the development of life sciences.
