In 2016, WU Yueliang, Vice President of UCAS, attended the first International Science Forum of National Scientific Organizations on the Belt and Road Initiative, during which UCAS hosted a session on capacity building, personal training and basic research. He noted that UCAS has more than 800 international graduate students, most of whom are from “Belt and Road” countries and regions. UCAS is also building scientific research and educational platforms, such as the Sino-Danish College and the International Center for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific (ICTP-AP). The university also actively promotes scientific and educational exchanges, basic research, and capacity building between the “One Belt, One Road” nations.

The meeting was followed by a Signing Ceremony for UCAS and ICTP, and the Unveiling Ceremony for the International Center for Theoretical Physics Asia-Pacific (ICTP-AP).

The ICTP-AP is a UNESCO sub-center jointly created by CAS, NFSC and ICTP. It is the first basic science center established in China. The cooperation memorandum between UCAS and ICTP serves as a key document for the organizing and management of ICTP-AP and the legal basis for its future operation. President BAI Chunli and Assistant Director-General Flavia Schlegel witnessed the ceremonies.

At the seminar, XUE Suijian, Deputy Director-General of National Astronomical Observatories Observatory of CAS , Ennio Vivaldi Véjar, President of the University of Chile, and Andrew Cohen, Director of HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study, delivered keynote speeches on the education and cultivation of innovative international talents in science and technology. YANG Jinlong, Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of China, chaired this session.

Over 60 representatives from more than 30 universities, institutions, and organizations attended the seminar, including UNESCO, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Municipal Education Commission, National Institute of Education Sciences, APRU International Secretariat, ICIMOD, Nanyang Technological University, Kazan National Research Technological University, Tribhuvan University, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences, University of Ghent, James Cook University, Australia Education Management Group, University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, University of Aberdeen, and Ministry of Education of Thai Embassy.
