Recently, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "UCAS") Sri Lankan 2018 PhD graduate student NANDANI EDIRIWEERA JAYASEKARA KURUNDU PATABENDIGE (cultivation unit: Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics of UCAS), won the President's Award for Scientific Publication. The award is one of the highest level publication awards in Sri Lanka, and rewards outstanding research papers published in various fields in Sri Lanka in 2016. Nandani's paper is the only award-winning paper in the field of mathematical physics and applied mathematics in 2016, with only 15 winners in this field. The acquisition of this honor is a high recognition of the level of international students at UCAS.

Nandani poses with her supervisor Guan Xiwen

Nandani's award-winning paper is about quantum multi-body correlation functions. Quantum correlation function has always been a difficult and important point in quantum mechanics. It contains rich multi-body related information of wave functions. However, since the Hilbert space of a multi-body system increases with the population number index, there are huge difficulties in using numerical methods. One-dimensional quantum systems have strong correlation characteristics, and the approximation method does not study the correlation properties of the system well. Even if the system has a strict solution, its wave function is quite complicated, and the calculation for the actual physical system is still a very difficult subject. In terms of theoretical research, more than three or more short-range and long-range correlation functions have not obtained any analytical and numerical results.

Nandani developed a new mathematical method to calculate one-dimensional quantum multi-body correlation function in the doctoral research. Applying random matrix theory, the analytical expressions of local and non-local quantum correlation functions of arbitrary M-body are obtained. The multi-body utility of body association has attracted the attention of many well-known experts in this field, and has received some important references, which have been highly evaluated by international peers. This work was done in collaboration with Tutor GUAN XIWEN (Guide of the Doctoral Supervisor, Researcher of the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics of UCAS), Professor TAN SHINA of Peking University, and Professor Rudolf Roemer of the University of Warwick.

After the award, Nandani shared the good news with GUAN XIWEN at the first time, thanking him for his training and help. In 2014, Nandani entered the Guan ‘s Group through the “Chinese Academy of Sciences and Developing Countries Scholarship Program” to pursue a doctoral degree. In the four years of studying in China, the teacher taught her in accordance with his aptitude and guided her to combine her mathematics foundation with the research direction of the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, gradually helping her to establish scientific research confidence and cultivate good scientific accomplishment. Nandani worked diligently and published many research results in journals such as New Journal of Physics under the guidance of the teacher.

The CAS-TWAS President's Fellowship Programme is the Chinese Academy of Sciences' response to the National “One Belt, One Road” policy. To cultivate talents in developing countries and improve the technological innovation and regional development capabilities of developing countries. It is a talent development program established in agreement with the Academy of Developing Countries. The program provides full scholarships for 140 foreign outstanding young students to study for doctoral degrees at UCAS each year.

Till the end of 2017, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences has 1,571 foreign students from 91 countries, which is the largest university in China to receive foreign doctoral students. In 2017, 102 international students from 28 countries received a degree, including 62 first doctoral graduates from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Developing Countries Dean's Scholarship Program.

Nandani said in her letter that she can win this award, which is inseparable from this study experience in China. She has benefited from the high-quality research environment, excellent management, first-class platform, equipment, and high-level academic exchanges of the postgraduates of UCAS, which has improved her academic level and ability.

During his studies, Nandani actively participated in the summer school organized by the International College as well as the cultural exchange activities organized by the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics. In her impression of the teachers of UCAS, there are two key words: intimate and warm. When the students encounter difficulties and make demands, the teachers will always spare no effort to help them solve the problems.

Mr. GUAN XIWEN has served as a senior research fellow at the Australian National University's Institute of Physics and Engineering. He is a senior visiting scholar at world-class research institutions such as Harvard University and Los Alamos National Laboratory, visiting professor at the Tsinghua University Institute of Advanced Studies, and visiting YANG ZHENGNING of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Scholars. In the accurate solvable models involved in cold atomic gas, spin liquid and strongly associated electrons, he has obtained internationally influential research results. Till now, he has published many papers in the international top journals "Review of Modern Physics", "Advance in Physics", Nature Communications, "Physical Review Letters". He also is  a member of the Advisory Panel of the Journal of Physics A.

As a doctoral tutor, GUANXIWEN has always attached great importance to the training of students. Although he has not taught many students in a few years, these students have won many awards many times. Among 2018 doctoral graduates, CHEN YANGYANG has twice won the National Scholarship, the BHPB Scholarship of the UCAS and the WANG TIANJUAN Subject Award of the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, and received the subsidization of public sending abroad joint training project by CSC. HE WENBINonce received a doctoral degree national scholarship and was awarded a postdoctoral position jointly by Professor Stefano Chesi from the Beijing Center for Computational Science and Professor Henrik Johannesson from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. CHENG SONG received a postdoctoral position from the Italian Institute of Advanced Studies for 3 years. Among the current graduate students, PENG LI has won a national scholarship for master's degree students, and won the award in the TIANJUAN Masters Student Forum of Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics.

Professor Guans students are from the 985 colleges and universities, as well as those from ordinary colleges and universities. Students mean responsibility and obligation to him. "How to train them into useful talents in the future? What can they learn from me?" These are the questions that he often thinks about. The starting point and foundation of the students may be different, but the most important thing is to encourage them to like their own research, to guide them to understand the mystery of nature and science from scientific research, to cultivate their ability to think and solve problems independently, to perceive and see the physical world that others have not seen and cultivate their true feelings, abilities, and pursuits of scientific research at different levels, not just teaching them to publish one or more articles.

He believes that the tutor should be able to return to the students' work at any time, give timely guidance on the problems arising from the student's research, and create a research team with a good academic atmosphere and high taste, which has a profound impact on students.
