Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a sudden, unexpected death caused by loss of heart function (sudden cardiac arrest), causing over 540,000 deaths in China. As SCD occurs at any time and everywhere, in order to effectively protect teachers and students, up to December 11, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) has equipped its four campuses with 20 automatic external defibrillators (AED). Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a medical condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly. The combination of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation is effective in saving lives when used in the first few minutes following collapse from sudden cardiac arrest. Nowadays, AED is widely used in various public places.
At the same time of AED installation, CPR&AED training are carried out to help UCAS staff and students to achieve enough related knowledge and skills. It is conducive to improving the ability of teachers and students to deal with emergencies and conduct first aid, and to improve their ability to rescue themselves and each other. All these measures build a defense for life.
